Celebrating Shantawene: A Triumph in Ethiopian Coffee

UPDATE: We’re thrilled to share that Shantawene has achieved an incredible milestone by securing 7th place (out of more than 1,400 entries) in the prestigious 2020 Cup of Excellence in Ethiopia! This recognition highlights the dedication and passion behind every bean cultivated in this remarkable region.

A Vision Born in 2006

In 2006, brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo founded Daye Bensa, a coffee-growing and exporting enterprise rooted in Ethiopia’s rich coffee heritage. Their vision extended beyond their own farm in Shantawene Village, encompassing a collaborative effort with “out-growers”—smallholder farmers—from three villages: Shantawene, Karamo, and Bombe.

Ethiopia Shantawene coffee takes its name from the village at the heart of this community, where the majority of farm workers, many of them women, call home. This connection to the land and its people gives the coffee a profound sense of place.

The Daye Bensa Legacy

Daye Bensa’s farms span elevations of 1,900 to 2,217 meters, with coffee cherries sourced from out-growers farming even higher, between 2,000 and 2,400 meters. These exceptional elevations contribute to the unique flavor profiles of their coffees.

The enterprise manages 15 washing stations across three districts, ensuring quality control throughout the processing and exporting stages. Both farms in Kaffa and Sidamo hold certifications for Organic, UTZ, Rainforest Alliance, and C.A.F.E. practices, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable and ethical farming.

Celebrating Farmers and Fostering Growth

A cornerstone of Daye Bensa’s approach is their annual Out-Growers Day. This vibrant event brings together nearly 1,000 farmers to celebrate the harvest and receive second payments for their coffee cherry contributions. As part of their commitment to excellence, Daye Bensa awards certificates and cash prizes to the top three farmers from each village, honoring their dedication to delivering consistently high-quality cherries.

Looking ahead, Daye Bensa is eager to expand its network of farmers, particularly encouraging women to take leadership roles in coffee cultivation. They also aim to collaborate with Hawassa University, supporting student research to enhance coffee quality and farming practices.

A Taste of Shantawene

Ethiopia Shantawene coffee is a sensory delight, boasting vibrant cupping notes of raspberry jam, plum, tropical fruit, and spice. Its clean and complex profile, paired with juicy acidity, makes it a standout choice for coffee lovers seeking something truly special.
